Pedro Point Coastal Trail

Pacifica, California

Sofia Zander, with TrailPeople, led a team to develop 1.5 miles of California Coastal Trail along the steep slopes of the Pedro Point Headlands in Pacifica. The trail will complete a missing link in the California Coastal Trail; allow (for the first time) bicycle and pedestrian access to Devil’s Slide Trail and Pedro Point Headlands hiking trails; and create a safer alternative to bicycling along Highway 1. The project included robust community engagement, a biological resource and tree inventory, an aerial fly-over to produce 3-D imagery, an evaluation of geologic and geotechnical conditions, and the production of draft and preferred trail alignments, slopes, widths, surface materials, and retaining walls. The project also included options for a staging area on the north end of the segment, including improved bicycle and pedestrian access along a local roadway.
