Annie & Mary Trail Connectivity Project

Arcata, California

Sofia Zander led the feasibility planning and design of 30% construction documents, in conjunction with SHN Engineers, for the Annie & Mary Trail. This major rail-trail will serve recreation and transportation purposes in the northern part of the City of Arcata. The project connects industrial areas, schools, parks, retail districts, neighborhoods (including student and low-income housing), Humboldt State University, and Downtown. It will also extend northeast to the City of Blue Lake.

The project evaluated rail-with-trail, rail-to-trail, and alternative route options for the corridor and supported a robust community engagement program to determine the configuration that would best serve the community. Using a network analysis to determine where new connections most increased access, the team planned bikeways, walkways, and access across two complex state highway interchanges.

The project was funded in Cycle V of Caltran’s Active Transportation Program and is currently in final design.
